Juggling sport and after school activities with children has always taken some acute planning on the part of the parent.

Things like time constraints due to work and siblings, not to mention other sports and activities can make it hard. It is important in this case to choose a school that has a variety of scheduled times and locations to fit in with the ever evolving needs of your family.

Keep in mind that it is personal and that there is no need to measure the success of your child against your ability as a parent. Also understand that some children are going to train more and progress faster than others due to their personal priorities. Not to mention natural ability and at home practice etc.

If you are looking to have your child benefit from the lessons that martial arts training has to offer, then here are some factors to consider a regular routine as best as you can.

Here is why:

  • Confidence thru Skill Development: Real confidence in ability will come for children who practise and reinforce techniques more frequently, leading to faster skill development and mastery of martial arts techniques.
  • They will not forget between classes: Regular practice sessions help children retain what they’ve learned more effectively. With more frequent exposure to training, they’re less likely to forget techniques or concepts between sessions. Thus building on skills every class rather than relearning.
  • Enhanced Focus and Concentration: Regular, structured practice can translate into better academic performance and attention span in other areas of life including other sporting activities down the track. Good habits are formed at an early age and show after months and years of practice.
  • Success Builds Success, Snowballing Self-Esteem: Regular attendance and consistent progress in martial arts classes boost children’s self-esteem. Achieving milestones and mastering new skills through frequent training sessions instils a sense of accomplishment and self-assurance.
  • Stronger Sense of Commitment and Discipline: Committing to regular training sessions per week instils a strong sense of discipline and dedication in children. They learn the importance of consistent effort and the value of setting and achieving goals through regular practice. And of course how to turn up on days that they don’t want to.
  • Deeper Understanding of The Art: Repetition is key to mastering martial arts techniques. Attending multiple sessions per week allows children to delve deeper into the intricacies of each technique, leading to a more profound understanding and proficiency.

What if I just want them to see how they like it for a while then decide?

The younger your child is, the more important it is to have them try a variety of sports. It is likely that whatever sport they spend the most time in and progress in, they will enjoy.

There are also factors like comradery which helps with socialising. And an encouraging environment that they can feel a part of.

Do a trial for a couple of weeks, get them to bring along a friend and make an informed decision through experiencing the class environment.

I don’t want to commit to the financial side of it as I have a budget.

Having a family budget is important. We set up a fee schedule so that the same amount is deducted every week. And all good martial arts or sports clubs will ask for some type of commitment both physically and financially. They should be showing commitment to your child as a coach as well.

That being said, be careful with long term contracts. You should not be afraid of getting caught out and stuck paying fees long term if unforeseen changes occur.

What if other events come up and we cannot make it anymore?

Families can change their routine often throughout any given year. Plan ahead. Make sure that you find a school that has a variety of class times and locations so that you can adapt and stick to the commitment that you have decided to make.

Your adult child will thank you in years to come, even if they don’t know or appreciate your efforts now. You got this!
