As participants progress, a blue top is awarded, signifying confidence and proficiency. Assessment areas include First Aid, Mat Safety/Awareness, General Coaching Principles, Discrimination and Harassment, OH&S, and Ages and Stages.

After walking into his first dojo around 1987 John has been as enthusiastic as they come with training and later teaching martial arts.

After walking into his first dojo around 1987 John has been as enthusiastic as they come with training and later teaching martial arts. After achieving his Black Belt in 1997 he moved to the Gold Coast from New Zealand permanently in 2001.
Then in 2006 he opened his very own school after teaching for his instructors elsewhere for some time. He maintains his own training weekly in a variety of martial arts styles and has also competed in a number of events from Judo and BJJ to Shoot fighting and Karate and he also has teaching qualifications throughout a number of fields. In addition to his years of experience teaching in martial arts and in the security and self defence training industry, John has a few other qualifications that include:
Diploma in Sport Coaching majoring in Martial Arts
Certificate 4 in Fitness
Certificate 4 in Workplace Training and Assessment
Certified Instructor for PPCT Defensive Tactics, control and restraint, and Baton Handcuffing for Security and Law enforcement work.
Kyoshi Level Diploma for teaching martial arts
Assorted other certification in Coaching and development of Kettlebell Training, Olympic Weight lifting, Developing Resilience in Youth, Child Development and much more.
Although he can be spotted in the kids classes from time to time, he has been focusing on our teen and adult members as his own children participate in the programs.
Joel started training in 2001 at the age of 10 years. One of the first to train in our Kidz Karate Program as it was in the early stages back then. He was excited to learn about all of the cool things that he had seen in movies and games etc. suffice to say, the kids program deliver and he has gone on the become the lead kids instructor at Southern Cross.
He completed a traineeship within our organisation in 2006 and has been teaching for more than 12 years. He has completed 2 years of a degree in education and decided that the school based education system did not suit his passion for teaching. Teaching Martial Arts to children however does, and he is in charge of the day to day running of our Junior Dragons and Red Dragons Programs. His experience in competition includes KUDO (Japanese gi MMA), Freestyle martial arts tournaments and full contact competitions. He also has experience working casually in the security and hospitality industry.

Brooke started training in 2005 at the age of 4 years. And was a member of our Leadership team from an early age as well. Brooke completed her Certificate 3 in Community Recreation in 2019. She has competed at assorted levels in competition but her natural talent lies in engaging kids and motivating them to seek a high standard of training while having the most amount of fun possible. This is why she is seen at the helm of most of our Junior Dragons Classes.

Assorted other certification in Coaching children with special needs, Coaching and development of Children.
Aaron was one of the original members of our Robina Dojo back in 2010. He was an enthusiastic 5 year old who has grown through our Children’s Programs Since.
He achieved his 2nd Degree Black Belt in 2022 at our National Black Belt Gradings, and has been a member of our leadership team since age 10.
He has been involved heavily in competition. From Youth MMA to points Karate and many in between. He has represented Australia in events overseas and is still going strong.

Kosen Judo (Orange Belt)
Muay Thai Kickboxing (Purple Armband)
Australian Representative in WMAC (World Martial Arts Championships)
Jayden was one of the original members of our Merrima Dojo back in 2014. He began as a keen young prep kid in the after school care program and grew through our Children’s Programs into a very technical and capable young Martial Artist.
He achieved his Junior Black Belt in 2021 at our National Black Belt Gradings, and has graded 4 times since then to the advanced Junior Black Levels. He has honed his leadership and teaching skills since age 10, clocking up more mat time and teaching time than any member we have. All of this while working in the hospitality industry on weekends.
He has been involved heavily in competition. From Youth MMA to full contact Karate and has been a regular at our grappling classes for several years. At 15 years old, Jayden is our youngest Sempai and is looking to be our youngest Full Black Belt (Shodan in 2023).

Jenna started her martial arts journey as a young child at a local TaeKwonDo club for a number of years but stopped to focus on other life events. As a young teen she decided to begin training with us at SCMA and has been a dedicated member since.
